Volcanoes National Park, in Rwanda's northwest, is the country's flagship destination and part of the Virunga Massif — the volcanic chain shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC that is one of only two places on earth where mountain gorillas survive.
What sets Rwanda apart is accessibility: the park is just a 2–3 hour drive from Kigali International Airport on excellent tarmac roads, making it ideal for short, high-impact trips. Treks are often shorter than in Bwindi, and many lodges sit minutes from the park gate.
This is also the home of Dian Fossey's research legacy — visitors can hike to the former Karisoke research station. Beyond gorillas, the park offers golden monkey tracking and the annual Kwita Izina gorilla-naming ceremony.
