Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: The Complete 2026 Guide
Tracking mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth, and Uganda is among the best places in the world to do it. This guide covers everything you need to plan a successful trek in 2026.
Where to go gorilla trekking in Uganda
Uganda has two gorilla destinations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the southwest, home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is the most popular, with four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
Gorilla permits and costs
A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents. Permits are limited and in high demand, especially in peak season, so booking several months ahead is strongly recommended. We handle permit booking as part of every gorilla package.
Best time to go
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer easier trails and more comfortable conditions. The wet season brings lush scenery and fewer crowds, but muddier, steeper hikes.
What to pack
- Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots
- Long-sleeved shirts and trousers (protection from nettles)
- Waterproof jacket and a rain cover for your bag
- Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation
- At least 2 litres of water and energy snacks
What the trek is like
Treks begin with an early-morning briefing, then you set off with a guide and trackers. Finding the gorillas can take anywhere from one to six hours depending on their location. Once you reach them, you spend a magical one hour in their presence — a strict limit that protects the animals.
