Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale: Permits, Cost & What to Expect
Often overshadowed by gorillas, chimpanzee trekking is one of Uganda's most rewarding wildlife experiences — and a brilliant addition to any safari. Kibale Forest National Park is the best place in East Africa to do it.
Why Kibale
Kibale is home to over 1,400 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, making it the premier chimpanzee destination in the region. Trekking with trained rangers, you quietly follow a habituated group through the rainforest — an experience that is both exhilarating and deeply moving.
Permits and cost
A chimpanzee tracking permit costs approximately USD 200 per person — considerably less than a gorilla permit, which makes it accessible for many travellers. As with gorillas, permits are best arranged in advance through a licensed operator.
What to expect
Treks begin with a morning briefing, then you head into the forest with a ranger. Finding the chimps usually takes one to three hours. Unlike the more sedentary gorillas, chimps are fast and active, swinging through the canopy and moving across the forest floor — so be ready to move. Early starts catch them at their most active.
Gorillas vs chimps: which to choose?
You do not have to choose — many of our itineraries include both. Gorilla trekking is the more intense, premium experience; chimpanzee trekking is more affordable, faster-paced, and pairs beautifully with a Kibale or Queen Elizabeth leg of your trip.
Best time to go
Like gorilla trekking, the drier months (June–September and December–February) offer easier trails, though chimp tracking runs year-round.
